So, I was going to write this in response to one of the comments I got in a previous post, but realized it's kind of worthy of a post in and of itself (that and poor
paceyringwald didn't deserve my mini-rant as a reply to her comment, lol).
Here it is, in all it's glory:
I think I may be approaching this from a different point of view than most people, but I don't think the new default commenting page is all that bad. There is a ton of research that suggests that people read the web better when a larger font is used. I've recently read research that suggest a size 16 font is ideal. (I'm trying to track down these papers and will post links when I find them.)
The inclusion of AJAX has been a long time coming. AJAX is amazing technology that cuts down on load time, allows for user interactivity, and (a plus for LJ) can cut down on the strain on the server since more is done client side rather than server side. I would venture to guess that almost all the websites the average LJ user visit uses some form of AJAX (be it jQuery, Mootools, whatever). I'm not sure where all the hate for AJAX is coming from other than ignorance of what the technology is.
LJ is essentially built off of ancient (10 years is freaking old in technology terms) coding. I'm actually surprised it took them this long to decide that some of the code simply needs to be rewritten. Hell, I find myself rewriting code half as old all the time. The programming just no longer suits the purpose or it's no longer future proof. Believe me, I would much rather stack more code on top of old code and call it a day. It's the easiest approach but sometimes it's simply not feasible.
I can understand the missing of subject lines in the comments though. I think I customized my journal so it doesn't show subject lines in comments a long time ago as I'm not a big fan of them and never use them, but yeah, for kink memes and things of that nature...they're definitely a must. I've read that LJ has no plan to reinstate them, which really is a shame I can see why people are pissed about this. But yeah, the other stuff? Come on, lol.
I wouldn't be surprised if LJ comes out with a slightly less aggressive color scheme, although I've got to be honest, I have no problem with it. I think most people have their brightness settings too high, which all naturally cause eyestrain. Combine that with a less than stellar color scheme and yeah, they're asking for problems.
So yeah, there you go. May not be the popular opinion, but I believe that even the villain deserves people on their side from time to time.
